General Merrill “Tony” McPeak has served under nine commanders in chief. As a former Air Force Chief of Staff, he advised two presidents directly regarding the decision to send men and woman into harm’s way. After a lifetime of service, he knows that all the Washington experience in the world cannot replace good judgment. Now a private citizen, he’s working to elect Barack Obama as President.
This weekend, General McPeak attended house parties in Intervale and Gorham to share his evaluation of Barack’s leadership qualities with New Hampshire voters.
At a house party in Gorham, General McPeak said:
[H]e has the judgment and the character and the personality we need, not just to be a good commander in chief, but to be one of the great ones.
General McPeak told his listeners that he had felt proud of our country’s standing in the world when he retired in 1994, following the fall of the Soviet Union and the end of Desert Storm. Today, he believes that America’s esteem has taken a “precipitous fall.” Barack can change this, General McPeak said, because he has the power to inspire people both at home and abroad.
“I’m too old to write fan mail,” he said, “but I can say that he has a rare quality of being able to inspire when he talks.”
North Conway resident Kathleen, whose family contains many military veterans, said that General McPeak’s evaluation of Barack’s judgment is particularly persuasive.
“The more intelligent military officers that support Barack,” she said, “the more clear it becomes that he’s shown great judgment on opposing this war that is really hurting this generation of service men and women.”
General McPeak is confident that Barack knows the possibilities and limits of American power and has the judgment to use that power wisely and responsibly.
