Five years before giving birth to a future presidential contender, the girl from Kansas extended her hand to Susan Botkin, a fellow ninth-grader. “Hi. I’m Stanley,” she said, rolling her eyes. “My dad wanted a boy.” He’d get a grandson, Barack Obama, who has almost locked up becoming the first African-American presidential nominee from a major party. Obama recently said that if his mother had lived to see his success to date, “she’d say, ‘Don’t let it get to your head. Just keep on working hard.’ But I think she’d be pretty proud.”

Major Clinton fundraiser switches to Obama

Posted: 11:25 PM ET Clinton lost a big fundraiser to Obama.

(CNN) — A “Hillraiser” – a major fundraiser for Hillary Clinton – said Friday he had defected to Barack Obama’s campaign. The official announcement will be made next week.

Gabriel Guerra-Mondragon – who served as ambassador to Chile during the Clinton administration – had raised close to half a million dollars for Clinton’s campaign, reports Chuck Todd, who broke the story.

"We're just bleeding each other out," Guerra-Mondragon told the Washington Post. "Looking at it as coldly as I can, I just don't see how Senator Clinton can overcome Senator Obama with delegates and popular votes. I want this fight to be over, the quicker the better."

He added that leaving the Clinton campaign for Obama's "was a very, very difficult decision for me to make. I am an old and longtime friend of Senator Clinton. And I continue to think she is a fantastic and formidable person. But I am first of all a Democrat."

Are You in Favor of a Public Dress Code?

Would I walk around in public letting my underwear be exposed from the tops of my pants? No, not I. Just because I wouldn't choose to dress this way, do I think it should be illegal - heck no! What if someone splits his or her pants at work and the underwear are exposed due to a lack of a change of clothes, should he or she be fined for the clothing splitting because the underwear are showing?

Would I go jogging in public or go to the gym for a workout in a sports bra - most definitely, especially in the Las Vegas heat. Considering my sports bras are 4 times larger than most bikini bathing suit tops, where is the harm in that? Following the logic that sports bras should be illegal in public, it appears the government will move next to ban all bikini swimsuits at public pools and public beaches.

What are your thoughts? Imagine what our government could accomplish if time weren't spent on this type of proposed legislation.

Baggy pants that show boxer shorts or thongs would be illegal under a proposed amendment to Atlanta's indecency laws. The proposed ordinance would also bar women from showing the strap of a thong beneath their pants. They would also be prohibited from wearing jogging bras in public or showing a bra strap.

On June 21, 2005, Tony Benn (interviewed about Britain's NHS in the movie SiCKO and former Labour MP and cabinet minister in Britain) presented a show on democracy as part of the Channel 5 series Big Ideas That Changed The World. In this BBC documentary, Tony Benn looks at how the concept of democracy developed and spread across the world over the centuries from its beginnings in Ancient Greece. Particularly considers the impact of extending the vote to more people in 19th century Britain and the state of democracy in 20th century Britain.

15,000 Doctors: “Single Payer National Health Insurance is the Only Solution”

CHICAGO — The U.S. Census Bureau released data today showing that the number of uninsured Americans jumped by 2.2 million in 2006 to 47.0 million people, with nearly all the increase (2.03 million) concentrated among middle-class Americans earning over $50,000 per year, according to an analysis by Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP). Strikingly, 1.4 million of the newly uninsured were in families making over $75,000 per year. An additional 600,000 were in families earning $50,000 to $75,000 per year. (The median household income in 2006 was $48,200).

“Middle income Americans are now experiencing the human suffering that comes with being uninsured. It makes any illness a potential economic and social catastrophe,” said Dr. Steffie Woolhandler, co-founder of Physicians for a National Health Program and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Physicians for a National Health Program also noted the following:

1- The 2.18 million rise in the number of uninsured is the biggest jump reported by the Census Bureau since 1992.

2 - There are now more uninsured in the U.S. — 47.0 million — than at any time since passage of Medicare/Medicaid in the mid-1960’s.

3 - 93% of the increase is among middle and high income families:

Of the 2.18 million increase:

1.398 million (64% of the increase) was in >$75k family income
An additional 633,000 (29% of the increase) was among $50-$75k group

Among full time workers, the number of uninsured increased by 1.230 million (56.4% of the increase).

4 - In Massachusetts, often cited as a model for health reform, the number of uninsured increased from 583,000 in 2005 (9.2 percent) to 657,000 in 2006 (10.4 percent of the population).

5 - The divergence between poverty and uninsurance is relatively new and striking. Until recently, as poverty went down uninsurance fell. That has changed.

6 - The number of uninsured children has fallen only 17 percent since SCHIP was enacted in 1997 from 10.74 million (adjusted to be comparable to current figures) to 8.66 million. The number of uninsured children rose by 611,000 between 2005 and 2006.

The doctors’ group said that the only solution to the rising number of uninsured and underinsured is a single-payer national health insurance program, publicly financed but delivered by private doctors and hospitals. Such a program could save more than $400 billion annually in administrative waste, enough to provide high-quality coverage to all and halt the erosion of the current private system.

“We can no longer afford the waste and inefficiency, the high overhead and outrageous executive salaries of the private insurance industry” said Dr. Don McCanne, senior health policy fellow for PNHP. “Only reforms that end our reliance on defective private coverage and assure guaranteed coverage for all will work.”

“The experience of other industrialized nations teaches us that high-quality, comprehensive care can be provided to all our citizens,” said Dr. Quentin Young, National Coordinator of Physicians for a National Health Program. “A single-payer national health insurance system has emerged as only solution to the nation’s health system debacle.”

Rep. Shelley Berkley will host a "mock caucus" to help educate Nevadans about the caucus process TOMORROW.

The Nevada Democratic Party will hold “mockuses” – mock caucuses – around the state through Jan. 19 to help educate Nevadans on the caucus process, which is different than a primary. In each “mockus,” participants will caucus for their favorite type of pizza, instead of their favorite presidential candidate. Each mockus is open to the media and to the general public.

What: “Mock caucus” featuring Congresswoman Shelley Berkley. The event is free and open to the public.

NY Times: Republicans will use "elaborate dirty trick" to steal White House

Unless we act now, the White House -- and our democracy -- will be hijacked by a Republican "elaborate dirty trick" in June 2008.

So says a powerful editorial from the New York Times titled "Stacking the Electoral Deck".

Last Thursday, we told you about an unbelievable ballot initiative proposed for June 2008 in California -- a right-wing power grab straight out of Karl Rove's "dirty tricks" playbook. Hello,

My name is Lisa Beyer, and I have lived in Vegas since March of 2002, with the exception of 10 months in 2006 when I lived in Chicago. I am in the southwest area, precinct 6475.

I grew up in New Orleans where I lived off and on for the majority of my life. I have a bachelors degree in business management and a masters degree in business administration. I was employed with Harrah's Entertainment from March 1995 to February 2007 when my position was one of hundreds eliminated through a corporate reduction in force. The career with Harrah's is what brought me to Las Vegas, and I really enjoy living here.

My interests include water skiing, snow skiing, scuba diving, wine tasting, and travel. I have been fortunate to travel to more than 20 countries, and I enjoy learning about other people and their cultures.

In terms of my prior political involvement, I shudder to think back to my early voting years when I simply voted the way people close to me voted without really knowing the candidates or the issues. In the last 8+ years, I have been so disappointed with the track the country was progressing on, I took the initiative to become more educated and active on the issues we face as a nation, thereby becoming a much better voter.

In the 2004 presidential election, I went to rallies and attended house parties for the Democratic candidate, but I was not involved in volunteering for the campaign. For the 2008 presidential election, I am far more passionate about the election than any other time in my life, primarily because I am so excited about Barack Obama as a candidate.

I had not heard of Barack until the fall of 2006. The first time I recall seeing Barack was on TV on December 28, 2006 when the Oprah Winfrey show replayed the episode titled Barack Obama on the Tough Questions that had originally aired on October 18. I was very impressed when Barack shared his vision for the future and his message of hope to disillusioned Americans. Wow! What rock had I been living under not to have heard of this sincere, compassionate, intelligent, honest, and well-spoken senator?

On February 22, 2007, Oprah appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres show. Speaking on Ellen DeGeneres' chat show, Winfrey admits, "I'm feeling Barack." She continues, "I don't just love him. I respect him. I think he's a fresh new voice in politics. I think what he can do for this country would be amazing."

(Note: I am not one of those Oprah viewers who believe that she is "perfect" or who follows her every move. In this instance, I am simply grateful that both Oprah's and Ellen's shows introduced me to Barack so I could go on to educate myself about his background and experience.)

In March 2007, I became involved at MyBarackObama.com (MYBO), and I signed up for my first event to attend a Barack Obama information party at AJ's house since he lives in the community right next to mine. Hearing Barack speak at the Iowa town hall meeting, I was impressed with his stance on the wide range of issues that are impacting our country these days. The list of issues that cause me to support Barack is so long, I won't try to list them all here in this post, but suffice it to say that his talk on March 31 affirmed my belief that he is THE candidate who I can whole-heartedly endorse and support to be the next leader for our country.

In April, I was amazed with Barack once again when he appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman on the 9th. Dave tried to get Barack to mud sling at other Democratic candidates, and I was impressed with how Barack stayed above the fray by answering the questions in a positive way indicating that he would not engage in a negative smear campaign that is the norm in US politics these days.

I became more involved with the campaign in April when I attended the Las Vegas HQ Organizational Meeting on the 14th and the Las Vegas HQ Office Grand Opening featuring National Campaign Director David Plouffe on the 19th. On the 16th, I participated in the first national Women for Obama conference call with Michelle Obama. I also joined several MYBO groups, including:

Women for Obama

I was out of town in May, but as soon as I returned, I became active again by attending the Las Vegas event on June 1 when Barack spoke at Silverado High School. On the 13th, I went to the Nevada Women for Obama kick-off with Michelle Obama at the Cambridge Community Center, and I was at Vegas HQ on the 24th for the Women for Obama conference call with Michelle Obama and Campaign Manager David Plouffe. If you haven't had the opportunity to see Barack or Michelle in person, I highly recommend taking advantage of future opportunities to join conference calls or attend local events when they return to the Las Vegas area.

In July, I attended my first SNFO event at the Suncoast Hotel and Casino for 'Lunch and a Movie' to see the new Michael Moore movie SiCKO. After the movie, I saw a post on BarackObama.com about whether or not Barack accepts funding from the health care lobby. Questions were back and forth, but no one took time to research the web for the answers. Wanting the answers myself, I searched the web and found several informative sites that answered the questions in great detail. In the spirit of sharing information, I posted a response with links to the information, and I realized that the SNFO members who saw SiCKO may also be interested in the information (see that post here: Sicko: Lobby Money to Legislators). Thus began my foray as a very active poster in the Barack in the Media forum. I am passionate about educating myself and sharing that information with SNFO members so that our site offers a "1-stop shop" to visit for the latest news and media coverage on Barack and the campaign. I encourage SNFO members to get active in the forum by submitting thoughts and questions on the articles posted and by posting new links to other articles.

AJ has done a lot of great work on the site! Have you checked out the new calendar yet? There are so many ways to get involved here, and many opportunities will be available in the near future to be active by volunteering to participate in events with the ultimate goal of high turn out at the January 19 caucus in each and every precinct in favor of Barack.

Yes...Hillary DID take contributions from the insurance industry. Unfortunately, Michael Moore has stated in two interviews that I know of ("Now" on PBS and on "Larry King Live") that he "thinks" Barack Obama has taken in just as much. A bunch of us have already sent emails to Michael Moore and have notified Barack's campaign about this. I'm not sure why Michael Moore is out there spreading this mis-information, but he is. Hopefully, at some point, Barack will correct him.

That's just it, I don't think he has. And Michael Moore didn't offer any proof of what he was saying, even prefacing his statement with "I think". He's speculating. And, for whatever reason, painting Hillary and Barack in the same light on this issue.

Let me play devil's advocate, because I dont know the answer. Is it possible that M Moore is talking about funds received for his previous elections? After all, he has been researching this movie a long time, and Obama's "citizens only" campaign started with this election cycle.
